As the growing season comes to an end in our area, the MGHC Hotline is receiving questions about when to expect frost in our area. Not an easy question to answer with a definite date!
The 90% frost date is about November 19 . So it would seem that between now and the week before Thanksgiving we should see our first frost.
But, that doesn’t necessarily mean your garden is done! Most cool season crops, (broccoli, cabbage, collards, spinach, etc) can stand temperatures into the mid twenties without severe damage, and some folks claim that a “slight freeze” even improves the taste!
The 90% date for mid-twenties temperatures is Christmas Day! And you can extend that date by covering your crops at night, creating a mini-tunnel, etc. Just be sure to keep things watered, they still need moisture to thrive, and provide fresh crops virtually year round.
