This series is ideal for novice gardeners or those who have recently relocated to this area.  We will teach you how to successfully garden despite the predominantly clay soil and the inconsistent weather. You will learn the horticultural science behind gardening and discover which plants work best in our area and which ones to avoid.  Most importantly, we will also provide you with the inside scoop on the best local nurseries and garden suppliers.

The class is held over four weeks in March in the ground-floor classroom (handicapped accessible) at the Hamilton County Extension Office (6183 Adamson Circle, off Bonny Oaks Drive). Topics include:

  • Soils & Fertilization / Composting & Turf Grasses
  • Landscape Design / Herbs
  • Perennials & Annuals / Vegetable Gardening
  • Trees & Shrubs / Natives & Wildlife

For additional details, email info@mghc.org or call the Hamilton County Extension Office at (423) 209-8560.

We also offer an in-depth Tennessee Extension Master Gardener (TEMG) Course to become a certified Master Gardener. In addition to 40 hours of classes, participants must perform 40 hours of volunteer service, as well as an additional 8 hours of continuing education to become a Master Gardener. Watch this short video for more information on our training programs to determine which one is right for you.
