On a hillside in Collegedale, just beyond the university, sits a delightful row of vegetable gardens. Master Gardener Isha Colbert has spent the last two years growing edible plants in her 8 x 20 garden plot. Surrounded by similar plots owned by neighbors, the sense of community in these gardens is strong, and the vegetables are plentiful. There is always something delicious to be harvested and good conversation to be had with great people. Isha has planned her garden masterfully to create a peaceful retreat within her space. Squash and melon vines artfully frame the area while okra grows tall and giant zinnias provide unexpected bursts of color. Made up of sixteen different types of plants, everything in the garden has been grown by Isha from seed. Everywhere you look, Isha’s garden is bursting with blooms, buds, and vegetables. Join us at Isha’s plot and see that vegetable gardening is more than practical; it can be absolutely beautiful.
