In 2008, George sold his house with a swimming pool and moved to a smaller home in a curve that provided him with a very spacious pie-shaped lot. He immediately began to move his daylilies to their new home. He had a retaining wall built on the west side so that he could mow the whole yard on his riding mower. Along the back property, he created a very large, raised garden area where he had planted 19 trees, cryptomeria and deodar cedar. This garden area is where most of the daylilies are planted along with the one that his grandmother purchased in 1956 for $10 (when Coke was a nickel).
George had lost his first wife several months before purchasing this home. In 2011, he married Ginny who suggested they add a screened-in porch and patio along with several more daylily beds. While daylilies are their passion – with over 225 different hybrid varieties – they also grow hostas and several different plants in pots. George and Ginny have been Master Gardeners since 2013 and will have attended the National Daylily Convention in Oklahoma City before this year’s Garden Tour.
