Master Gardeners are residents of the local community who take an active interest in gardening and in sharing their knowledge with others. This program is for you if you:
- want learn more about the care and maintenance of many types of plants
- want to participate in a practical and intense training program
- have enough time to attend training and to complete the volunteer service
- look forward to sharing knowledge with people in the community
To become a Certified Master Gardener you must complete the 40 training course, 40 hours of volunteer service and 8 additional hours of continuing education. You can find information about the Master Gardener program HERE.

Master Gardener Training Course
The University of Tennessee Extension Master Gardener Training Course offers extensive training in gardening. Classes are taught by the highest-quality, trained instructors using research-based information from the University of Tennessee. There are 40 hours of training presented over 15 weeks. Topics include: wildlife, basic landscaping, flowers, trees, lawns, insects, plant diseases, soils, fertilizers and vegetables.
The cost of the class includes course materials and handouts, as well as first-year membership dues. Couples living at the same residence who choose to share materials can receive a discount. Classes take place in the ground floor classroom (handicapped accessible) at the UT/TSU Hamilton County Extension Office, 6183 Adamson Circle, Chattanooga, TN 37416.
Volunteer Service
Volunteering is the heart of the Master Gardener program. There are various options for completing the required service hours to receive and maintain certification. Opportunities abound for volunteers at approved activities such as: working at MGHC’s annual Garden Expo, Garden Tour and Fall Festival; helping at one of our project gardens or partner agencies; participating at our public information tables or in various teaching opportunities.
Continuing Education
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) can be earned by attending monthly Master Gardener meetings and classes, attending programs of approved organizations, or watching approved videos. Other educational programs may be used to fulfill CEU requirement upon approval by the UT/TSU Hamilton County Extension Agent.
