Battle Academy is a K-5 magnet school in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. The rooftop garden is comprised of 9 raised beds along with a sensory garden and numerous native plants. All ages are involved in the of the garden, from seed starting to planting and harvesting.
The students get their hands dirty planting beans, lettuce, carrots, spinach, kale, and Brussels sprouts. The garden is used to teach the students gardening skills, science content knowledge, and how to pick and try new healthy snacks.
There is a 5th grade garden club that meets weekly to help with odds and ends. Most of the food from the garden is used in the culinary lab while the rest is sent home with kids and staff. Thank you to Laura Robinson and the Chattanooga Area Food Bank for all of your support and donations!
