Our dog days run from July 3 to August 11. Believe it or not, the expression “dog days” was coined by the ancient Romans. The hottest days of summer coincide with the rising of Sirius, the dog star. It is the brightest star in our sky. The ancients believed that it produced heat along with the sun, and so made summer miserable. Master Gardener Ann Bartlett tells us how a gardener can win against the dog days in the July Newsletter.
