Maclellan Island Adventure

Maclellan Island photos by Ella Kliger.

Master Gardener Ella Kliger describes her first visit to Maclellan Island during a winter project to remove invasive plants and reintroduce native plants to this fascinating Chattanooga island.

The Chattanooga Audubon Society (CAS) has been managing the island since Robert J. Maclellan donated it to them in 1954. Having been farmed and plowed nearly treeless by Native Americans until the early 1900s, it’s hard to believe how much plant life has wound itself around the island. It is overgrown with invasives like English ivy, poison ivy, and mungo grass, and CAS has a plan to make headway against those interlopers.
