DESCRIPTION:Join us for our August Third Saturday Gardening Class\, “Preparing a Cool Weather Vegetable Garden” presented by Master Gardeners Juanita Wade\, Vicki Guth\, and Debbie Bauder. The class will cover fall garden clean-up\, prepping the soil\, warm season versus cool season vegetables\, and how to extend the cool season with row covers and low tunnels. We will also discuss raised beds vs in-ground gardens\, as well as container gardening for those with limited space. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to combat invasive plants in your home garden! \n\n\n\nInvasive plants too often outcompete native and other desirable plants in our yards\, gardens and natural spaces. Master Gardener Don McKenzie will help you overcome qualms\, to effectively control these rapidly growing and reproducing non-native plants that so many of us struggle with. \n\n\n\nDon McKenzie was raised in Decatur\, AL\, Don earned a B.S. degree in Wildlife Management from Auburn University\, and a M.S. in Wildlife from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He worked as a waterfowl biologist in South Carolina swamps; an advocate for federal conservation policy in Washington\, DC; and an Assistant Chief of Wildlife Management with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. For the last 15 years of his career\, he was Director of the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative\, promoting restoration of native grassland habitats for quail and grassland birds across 25 states. DESCRIPTION:Master Gardener Don McKenzie will help you conquer your “fear of the unknown” by explaining\, demystifying\, and simplifying the use of herbicides as an indispensable tool for controlling invasive plants. Don brings his passion for encouraging others learn to eliminate invasive plants to help us act more effectively to tackle the many invasive plants that are threatening our yards\, gardens\, and natural spaces in southeast Tennessee. He will address herbicide safety concerns; provide a basic overview of the many types of herbicides; then focus on glyphosate as the overall safest\, most versatile\, and most effective herbicide for treating invasives.
