SUMMARY:3rd Saturday Class: All About Roses
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “All About Roses” presented by Master Gardener Susan Speraw. Susan is an avid gardener and has been growing roses for over thirty years\, first in California\, and more recently in East Tennessee. A member of the Tri-State Rose Society of Chattanooga\, her own rose garden on Signal Mountain contains over 40 different roses. The class will begin with a brief look at the history of the rose\, reaching back to what we know of its importance in ancient times\, and continuing forward with a discussion of the evolution of hybridizing\, and the creation of the modern rose that fills our gardens today. The class will also cover the various types of roses and their characteristics; practical tips for selecting the perfect rose for your setting\, and guidance on planting so your roses can thrive in a variety of different locations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClasses are held in person at the UT/TSU Hamilton County Extension (6183 Adamson Circle\, off Bonny Oaks Drive in Chattanooga). \n\n\n\nTo attend this class\, please register on SignUp HERE \n\n\n\nPlease visit MGHC’s YouTube channel for 3rd Saturday Class videos and other gardening-related presentations.

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to combat invasive plants in your home garden! \n\n\n\nInvasive plants too often outcompete native and other desirable plants in our yards\, gardens and natural spaces. Master Gardener Don McKenzie will help you overcome qualms\, to effectively control these rapidly growing and reproducing non-native plants that so many of us struggle with. \n\n\n\nDon McKenzie was raised in Decatur\, AL\, Don earned a B.S. degree in Wildlife Management from Auburn University\, and a M.S. in Wildlife from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He worked as a waterfowl biologist in South Carolina swamps; an advocate for federal conservation policy in Washington\, DC; and an Assistant Chief of Wildlife Management with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. For the last 15 years of his career\, he was Director of the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative\, promoting restoration of native grassland habitats for quail and grassland birds across 25 states.
