The Native Plant and Wildflower Group is a group of gardeners interested in using native plants (trees, shrubs, wildflowers) in our landscapes. The reasons are many, including the idea native plants are lower maintenance because they are, well, native to this area and that wildlife is naturally attracted to native plants for food and shelter. Native plants encourage and support biodiversity and help maintain the natural heritage of this area. Using native plants is a key to supporting and improving the local ecosystem.
The 2012 Plan includes the following activities:
Education
Offer a regular schedule of educational programs for Group members and the public:
- First Annual Native Plant Symposium March 10 featuring experts speaking on a variety of topics
- Native Plant and Biological and Environmental experts presenting information on a wide variety of topics at Group meetings held on the first Monday of each month
- Offering field trips and outings to learn more about wildflowers and native plants as well as their use in private and public landscapes (field trip schedules to be posted)
- Providing information to the public about using native plants in the landscape by staffing booths and distributing informational literature at community events, and other public and private venues like garden clubs and community groups.
Volunteerism
Provide volunteer support for selected projects, in partnership with other organizations
- Seeding the Cumberlands / Seeds of Success (go here for more information)
