The Southern Appalachian region is, next to Southern China, the most botanically rich region on earth. Most of the plants growing around us have been used as food and medicine for hundreds or thousands of years. Some of our native plants risk being overharvested because the global demand for them exceeds the supply. Join Holli Richey, MS, MSW, MAT at 6:00 PM Monday, December 5 at Green|Spaces to learn about the medicinal properties of plants native to this region and how you can “garden with a mission” by incorporating them into your yard and garden for both personal use and conservation.

Holli Richey is a clinical herbalist, counselor and teacher who practices with an integrative approach to mind-body-spirit healing. Holli’s philosophy of healing is that our body is wise, and our symptoms are our teacher. Through listening to our symptoms—whether they seem to be speaking from the mind, body or spirit—we gain awareness of our patterned approach to life, and discover new ways in which to shift toward wholeness.

This is a regular monthly meeting of the Chattanooga Native Plant and Wildflower Group, a special interest group of the Master Gardeners of Hamilton County. Educational presentations count as continuing education units.

Gardeners and homeowners — be inspired while supporting the Chattanooga Area Food Bank at the 23rd Annual Spring Garden Tour on June 4 and 5. This year, six gardens in the Chattanooga area are featured, each garden representing a work of art and love. We join our gardeners in welcoming you to celebrate the spring season with a leisurely stroll among perennials, herbs and native wildflowers. Tickets for the event cost $15 (children are free) and money raised supports the Food Bank mission. You can click here for a brochure and here for a map showing the six garden locations or call 423-622-1800 for more information.

Diamantis Garden

Welcome to Whiteoak, the Diamantis garden. Nestled at the base of Whiteoak Mountain, the garden was designed to recreate the beauty and charm of the English countryside found in the historical sheep-farming district known as Cotswolds. The cottage style garden is comprised of trees, shrubs, and perennials with a well house, fountain, folly and koi pond. Please give the active bee hive a wide birth.

Enjoy your walk!

Jon Nessle

The Nessle garden is an example of a Tennessee Upland Hardwood Forest, sitting on a 5 acre wooded lot in a traditional suburban neighborhood. Take the footpaths defined throughout the woods, or relax and enjoy the beauty of the rolling wooded landscape from the back deck. This garden demonstrates a no chemical, low maintenance landscape, highlighting the beauty of our native plants.

Marge & Ron Pasch

The backyard of this home is landscaped into garden “rooms”. An enclosed English garden features roses and boxwoods, while a small stream splashes down the back hillside in a Japanese-influenced landscape. A small shade garden is nestled in the back corner of the lot, while numerous vines provide shelter for nesting birds.

Patsy Boles (MGHC President)

Welcome to the Boles garden. Stack stone beds (built by Patsy) on the property enhance the cottage gardens & unify the various plantings throughout. Cool off in the shade garden or linger by the babbling brook in a nearby swing. Wander down the hill by the terraced vegetable beds and past the greenhouse with its collection of antique watering cans, to the pie shaped carpet and knockout rose gardens.

Kim Million

Want to attract hummingbirds to your garden? Come out and see what flowers, shrubs and ornamental trees attract and play host to these amazing creatures. A gently rolling, sun-loving garden wraps around the perimeter of the property where mass plantings of perennial beds mingle with annuals to provide the understory for flowering shrubs and trees.

St. Albans Community Garden

Opened in 2005, the St. Albans Community garden consists of 39 beds, is handicapped accessible, has restroom availability, provides garden tools for use at the garden, and is open to the community. A minimal fee is charged to cover water costs. The gardeners are dedicated to encouraging stewardship of the earth by growing vegetables organically.

More information about the Spring Garden Tour will be available soon.

Location: North Chickamauga Gorge State Natural Area
Description: We will be assembling at the Montlake Road Park entrance. This entrance is located on the left approximately 1 mile up the road from the Dayton Pike/Montlake Road intersection in Soddy Daisy. GPS Coordinates: N35 14.254 W85 14.066

The event will be canceled in the event of thunderstorms, heavy downpour or other weather anomalies.

We will begin the session with a short in-service on proper stem cutting and collecting techniques. Volunteers will be assigned species targeted for collection. It is important to know beforehand how many volunteers we will have so we can make assignments and stay organized, so let us know (contact information below) if you will be participating. Ideally, we will have enough helpers to assist with the species identification and collection methodology so you do not need to be an expert. Please be prompt if you tell us you are coming because we will wait for you.

We hope to collect between 50 and 75 cuttings of selected native species found in this area.
Doctor Shaw’s lab group has studied rare plant species of eastern Tennessee like American Chestnut, Fremont’s Leatherflower, Mountain Skullcap, and several others. Tennessee is a floristically rich state because it runs east/west through many physiographic provinces (e.g., Unaka Mountains, Ridge and Valley, and Cumberland Plateau) that are oriented from the northeast to the southwest in eastern North America. Because of this physiographic diversity, Tennessee contains 2,439 native plant species, which is greater than any other landlocked eastern state. The Tennessee Natural Heritage Program recognizes 490 plant species as rare in Tennessee and there are 16 federally listed and 332 state listed rare plant species in eastern Tennessee.

The meeting will be held in the Chattanooga Area Food Bank conference room and will begin at 6 pm sharp.
