The Southern Appalachian region is, next to Southern China, the most botanically rich region on earth. Most of the plants growing around us have been used as food and medicine for hundreds or thousands of years. Some of our native plants risk being overharvested because the global demand for them exceeds the supply. Join Holli Richey, MS, MSW, MAT at 6:00 PM Monday, December 5 at Green|Spaces to learn about the medicinal properties of plants native to this region and how you can “garden with a mission” by incorporating them into your yard and garden for both personal use and conservation.

Holli Richey is a clinical herbalist, counselor and teacher who practices with an integrative approach to mind-body-spirit healing. Holli’s philosophy of healing is that our body is wise, and our symptoms are our teacher. Through listening to our symptoms—whether they seem to be speaking from the mind, body or spirit—we gain awareness of our patterned approach to life, and discover new ways in which to shift toward wholeness.

This is a regular monthly meeting of the Chattanooga Native Plant and Wildflower Group, a special interest group of the Master Gardeners of Hamilton County. Educational presentations count as continuing education units.

Location: 1373 Osage Drive, Soddy Daisy, TN 37379 GPS: 35.28134,-85.13332
Description:

Now, it’s time to start working on our Hamilton County Fair exhibit which we will put in place at Chester Frost County Park beginning on Thursday, September, 22nd.

This year, our exhibit theme will be “Backyard Retreats.” Many of us have gotten together and started putting the plan designs on paper. The annual build day / barbeque will be Saturday August, 20th at 9:00 am at Bud’s Hines community lot on Soddy Lake.

Bring along spouses or friends and a dish to share and cold drinks. Burgers and dogs with all the fixings’ will be served at lunch. We’ll eat around noon and try to be finished by 4:00 pm.

Also bring plenty of drinking water along with cordless saws, battery powered drills (and extra battery if you have one) as the power grid is limited, folding chairs and a big hat. All handyman & woman skills and creative ideas are both wanted and needed. There will be many work
projects, building, assembling and painting, something for everyone.

This is a great opportunity to earn volunteer hours. Everyone is invited to take part in this educational, fun project that we hope will inspire and challenge all of the residents of Hamilton County who tour our exhibit at the Hamilton County Fair on September 24th & 25th, 2011.

Directions to Soddy Lake Build Day:

From North Gate Mall:
Take 153 N. to Hwy 27 N. toward Dayton
TN-319 Exit (4th exit) HIXSON PIKE/SODDY DAISY
Turn LEFT onto TSATI TER/TN-319 .03 miles
Turn RIGHT onto DAYTON PIKE (go 1.5 miles)
Turn RIGHT onto OSAGE DRIVE (2.6 miles)
End at 1373 Osage Drive, Soddy Daisy, TN 37379

This past weekend, June 4-5, 2011, people braved record-breaking temperatures to take part in the Chattanooga Area Food Bank’s 24th annual Spring Garden Tour. The tour took visitors through two community gardens and five private gardens.

The St. Alban’s Community Garden and the Chattanooga Area Food Bank’s Evelyn Davenport Navarre Teaching & Enabling Garden offer opportunities to the public to grow their own vegetables, flowers and herbs. While St. Alban’s rents raised beds for families to grow their own produce, they also host a Farmer’s Market on Saturdays as a community service to offer locally grown produce to the area. The CAFB’s teaching garden offers educational workshops to the public to teach earth-friendly methods of gardening and provides low-income residents the use of raised beds to grow produce for themselves and their neighbors.

The private gardens on the tour this year belonged to Jane & George Diamantis, Jon Nessle, Patsy Boles, Kim Million, and Marge & Ron Pasch. With homeowners giving tours of their gardens, the tour featured a variety of gardening styles. From formal English gardens with fountains and statuary, Japanese-influenced gardens, perennial gardens to attract butterflies and hummingbirds, or natural woodland landscapes, the tour had plenty to pique everyone’s gardening interest.

The proceeds from the 24th Spring Garden Tour will be used to assist the Chattanooga Area Food Bank in providing food for those in need.

Gardeners and homeowners — be inspired while supporting the Chattanooga Area Food Bank at the 23rd Annual Spring Garden Tour on June 4 and 5. This year, six gardens in the Chattanooga area are featured, each garden representing a work of art and love. We join our gardeners in welcoming you to celebrate the spring season with a leisurely stroll among perennials, herbs and native wildflowers. Tickets for the event cost $15 (children are free) and money raised supports the Food Bank mission. You can click here for a brochure and here for a map showing the six garden locations or call 423-622-1800 for more information.

Diamantis Garden

Welcome to Whiteoak, the Diamantis garden. Nestled at the base of Whiteoak Mountain, the garden was designed to recreate the beauty and charm of the English countryside found in the historical sheep-farming district known as Cotswolds. The cottage style garden is comprised of trees, shrubs, and perennials with a well house, fountain, folly and koi pond. Please give the active bee hive a wide birth.

Enjoy your walk!

Jon Nessle

The Nessle garden is an example of a Tennessee Upland Hardwood Forest, sitting on a 5 acre wooded lot in a traditional suburban neighborhood. Take the footpaths defined throughout the woods, or relax and enjoy the beauty of the rolling wooded landscape from the back deck. This garden demonstrates a no chemical, low maintenance landscape, highlighting the beauty of our native plants.

Marge & Ron Pasch

The backyard of this home is landscaped into garden “rooms”. An enclosed English garden features roses and boxwoods, while a small stream splashes down the back hillside in a Japanese-influenced landscape. A small shade garden is nestled in the back corner of the lot, while numerous vines provide shelter for nesting birds.

Patsy Boles (MGHC President)

Welcome to the Boles garden. Stack stone beds (built by Patsy) on the property enhance the cottage gardens & unify the various plantings throughout. Cool off in the shade garden or linger by the babbling brook in a nearby swing. Wander down the hill by the terraced vegetable beds and past the greenhouse with its collection of antique watering cans, to the pie shaped carpet and knockout rose gardens.

Kim Million

Want to attract hummingbirds to your garden? Come out and see what flowers, shrubs and ornamental trees attract and play host to these amazing creatures. A gently rolling, sun-loving garden wraps around the perimeter of the property where mass plantings of perennial beds mingle with annuals to provide the understory for flowering shrubs and trees.

St. Albans Community Garden

Opened in 2005, the St. Albans Community garden consists of 39 beds, is handicapped accessible, has restroom availability, provides garden tools for use at the garden, and is open to the community. A minimal fee is charged to cover water costs. The gardeners are dedicated to encouraging stewardship of the earth by growing vegetables organically.

More information about the Spring Garden Tour will be available soon.
