Title: Seeding the Cumberlands Collection Outing
Location: North Chickamauga Gorge State Natural Area
Description: We will be assembling at the Montlake Road Park entrance. This entrance is located on the left approximately 1 mile up the road from the Dayton Pike/Montlake Road intersection in Soddy Daisy. GPS Coordinates: N35 14.254 W85 14.066
We will begin the session with a short in-service on proper stem cutting and collecting techniques. Volunteers will be assigned species targeted for collection. It is important to know beforehand how many volunteers we will have so we can make assignments and stay organized, so let us know (contact information below) if you will be participating. Ideally, we will have enough helpers to assist with the species identification and collection methodology so you do not need to be an expert. Please be prompt if you tell us you are coming because we will wait for you.
We hope to collect between 50 and 75 cuttings of selected native species found in this area. Targeted species include Hearts-a-bustin (Euonymus americanum), Sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus), Mapleleaf viburnum (Viburnum acerfolia), Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia), Southern bush honeysuckle (Diervilla sessifolia), American holly (Ilex opaca), Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginica). The cuttings will then be prepared for propagation on the following Sunday at a place to be designated. There will be a separate announcement about the propagation session.
You are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and to bring water and snacks. This will not be a physically demanding outing. Terri will have some pruning shears available, but you are encouraged to bring your own shears and work gloves.
Please RSVP Terri Ballinger, State Interpretive Ranger at 790-8972 or you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
