Description: Our next volunteer collecting hike will be this Saturday, October 2nd at Barker Camp which is situated on Mowbray Mountain. This is an area adjacent to a local favorite swimming hole known as Paradise, and upon completion will be a lovely example of our upland Hemlock associated forest type. Barker Camp contains the first acreage that will be re-forested through our current seed collecting efforts, and we hope holds many exciting plant assemblages. As usual please come prepared with plenty of water, a sun hat, sunscreen, and lunch. We’ll plan to be out from 9am until 2 pm. We can meet at the Walmart in Soddy Daisy for folks near Hixson, if you want to carpool from Chattanooga, please call Terri Ballinger, State Interpretive Ranger (790-8972) to arrange a place to meet in town.
27 N to Thrasher Pike, left over the interstate, right at Dayton Pike. Turn left onto Montlake Road (like going to N. Chick Creek). Travel up the mountain, go left on Mowbray, the road ends at Poe and becomes Henson Gap. Go 3 or 4 miles, turn left on Grant Road, then left again on Barker Camp Rd., stay left. The pavement ends and the road is blocked by a gate, those driving can park here and ride in with us.
