Raised Bed Vegetable Planting Guide

By Dick Fehrenbacher

The table below provides guidelines for planting seeds based on an average last frost date of April 19 and first frost date of October 21 (Zone 7).  Some cool weather plants can be planted in the fall (see the Fall Gardening post).  The dates for planting seeds are averages; buying plant sets will mean a faster harvest, but seeds can always be planted.

Regarding space requirements, you can save space by using cages or trellis for vines.  Vining vegetables are indicated by an (A) by the name.

The following plants are NOT recommended for raised beds because of the space they require: melons, corn, okra, sweet potatoes.
